Gemstone Durability: To Wear or Not to Wear

Before diving into the beautiful world of gemstones, we must talk about what makes a gemstone durable. Gemstones are ranked on scales of hardness and toughness to determine how they can handle being worn day to day. Pieces with gemstones that rank high for hardness and toughness are perfect for everyday wear with care and you don’t have to worry about damaging them. Pieces with gemstones having lower ratings can still be worn, but keep those ready for that special occasion or fun night out with friends.

Let’s take a look at hardness and toughness.

Hardness

Hardness refers to a gemstone’s resistance to scratching on the surface. Gemstones with high ratings of hardness will likely not scratch from coming into contact with other surfaces, such as Sapphire and Ruby. However, gemstones on the lower end of the hardness scale, such as Amethyst, do scratch easily. This means you should be careful to limit the contact gemstones like these have with other surfaces.

Toughness

When we say toughness, we mean a gemstone’s resistance to breaking and chipping. This is different from hardness. It is possible for a stone, such as Diamond, to be very resistant to scratching but prone to chip if hit at certain angles. Tough gemstones, such as Alexandrite and Garnet, can hit surfaces or be dropped without much concern for breaking. Gemstones with lower toughness ratings, such as Opal and Pearl, should get extra care when being worn.

Birthstones and Zodiac Gemstones

Finding a gemstone with an extra special personal connection is easy with birthstones and zodiac gemstones. Your birthstone is a gemstone that represents the month that you were born. Your zodiac gemstone, or astrological birthstone, is the gemstone connected to the zodiac sign you were born under, such as Sagittarius, Cancer, Pisces, etc.

Each gemstone comes with its own energy, history, and aesthetic appeal. Some believe them to bring the wearer luck, life, and vibrancy. Others believe they are simply beautiful accents. No matter your belief, we can all agree that you will look stunning wearing your favorite gemstone.
